Trial underway for man charged with killing 5 people while driving drunk

A man accused of causing a wreck that killed five people is in court this week. Victims include three children: two teen-age girls and a 12-year-old boy.

Victims’ family members, including the wives of two men killed in the wreck last July, testified in court Wednesday and Thursday. The trial is scheduled to continue in Monongalia County Circuit Court today (Friday).

Brian Stone, of Cheat Lake, is charged with five counts of driving under the influence causing death and third-offense DUI. Police say Stone was driving drunk when his truck hit a car, forcing it across the Interstate 68 median into oncoming traffic where it slammed into an SUV. Five people were killed and seven others injured.

Stone’s been arrested on DUI charges seven times, five of those in Monongalia County since 2002. He lost his right to drive in West Virginia, but had a Pennsylvania license.
