Company adding jobs at former Ormet Aluminum plant

By Keri Brown

Last July, members of the United Steelworkers of America ratified a new contract with Ormet Aluminum, ending a nearly 20-month strike at its plants in Monroe County Ohio. During the labor dispute, Ormet sold its smaller operations in Friendly, West Virginia and to Ohio-based Aleris International. The equipment in the rolling mill, which is located directly across the Ohio River from New Martinsville was also sold. Nearly 600 jobs were lost.

But now, a New York company is relocating its steel plate operations to the former rolling mill in Hannibal Ohio. The company stores and distributes steel manufactured by other companies. Bob Schaal, the company’s president, says he expects to hire 30 people over the next few months. More jobs could be added as the company grows.
