DEP tracking abandoned quarries

Abandoned coal mines have left northern WV streams orange from acid mine drainage. Surface mine sites leave some mountains with a lopsided appearance. These examples of abandoned coal mines are well-documented, but what about the abandoned quarries throughout the state? We don’t hear as much about quarry reclamation, and it was not even required until recently. Now the DEP is taking inventory of all the abandoned quarries in the state to see which ones pose the greatest hazards.
