Mormon hopes to regain Promise Scholarship

By Scott Finn

David Haws was valedictorian at Bridgeport High three years ago, and earned a state-funded Promise Scholarship. He was a top student during his first year at WVU, but lost his scholarship anyway.

Haws is a Mormon. After his freshman year, he left to serve a two-year mission for his church. His request for a scholarship deferment  was denied; Haws and the ACLU filed a federal lawsuit that accuses the state of violating his First Amendment rights.

Haws just returned from his mission trip. He says he wants to return to WVU, but he’s also considering a full-ride offer from a Virginia college. Scott Finn interviewed Haws about his mission trip and his fight to regain the Promise Scholarship.
