Mittal Steel to shut down hot mill, officials say

By Keri Brown

Mittal Steel, the owners of the former Weirton Steel, are planning to close its hot mill operation, taking with it at least 200 jobs.

Mittal Steel officials notified the mayor and city manager of Weirton Thursday night of their decision to close the mill, according to city manager Gary Dufour.

A union official confirmed that Mittal Steel plans to close the hot mill. At least 200 jobs would be lost, said Bob Hoover, a representative for the United Steelworkers. The local chapter of the Unites Steelworkers of America was meeting Friday afternoon over the planned mill closure.

Mittal Steel, based in The Netherlands, bought out Weirton Steel in 2005. Since then, the company has cut about 800 jobs from its facilities, according to county officials.
