In 1997, the practice of mountaintop-removal mining was the focus of an investigative story in U.S. News and World Report. Journalist Penny Loeb wrote that story. At the time, she never dreamed the topic would consume 10 years of her life.

The result of all her work can be read in her new book, “Moving Mountains.” Loeb’s book examines the problems mining has caused in Southern West Virginia, and what’s been done to solve them.
