Victim’s family worries race is being lost in rape, torture case

The parents of Megan Williams and three African American ministers held a press conference Thursday afternoon to call on the Logan County prosecutor to vigorously pursue hate crime charges. They are concerned that the issue of race is being lost in this case.

This story also examines the definition of a federal hate crime. U.S. Attorney Charles Miller says this case may not meet the legal definition of a federal hate crime. Paul Sheridan, the head of the Civil Rights Division of the state Attorney General’s office, agrees.
