Chinese school tries something new: Creativity

You may have heard of the American book, “Why Johnny can’t read.” If that book were written in China today, it might have a different title: “Why Yuan can’t think for himself.”

Chinese tradition often values obedience over criticism, especially when children are involved. But Chinese educators know that to catch up with the West, they need to encourage students to be more creative.

Our reporter Scott Finn is traveling with West Virginia’s Trade Delegation to China. On Friday, he accompanied First Lady Gayle Manchin to a school in Shanxi Province, China’s main coal-mining region. Teachers at the school are encouraging students to think for themselves – with startling results.
