Heat costs rising, but assistance program could be cut

The cost of heating oil and propane is running 50% higher than last year. Meanwhile, the application deadline for assistance with heating bills this winter is just days away. But state managers of the program aren’t sure what level of funding to plan on.  

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program is operated by the Division of Family Assistance under the Bureau for Children and Families. It’s funded entirely by a federal block grant – and its fate is to be determined in the next 2 weeks.
