Murdered Marshall student was strangled, police say

By Clark Davis

Huntington police say a Marshall University student killed in December was strangled. Captain Steve Hall addressed the unsolved murder of Leah Hickman at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

No evidence was discovered at the scene, or by the medical examiner’s office, that Ms. Hickman was in any way sexually assaulted. Based upon the information we’ve obtained and evidence at the scene, we have no reason to believe it was a random act. We’ve firmly believed from the beginning, and we still believe to this date, that the person or persons responsible for this crime were familiar with Leah and certainly familiar with the apartment complex in which she lived,” Hall said.

Leah Hickman was a 21-year-old journalism student from Mason County. She was last seen December 14th, 2007. Investigators found her body one week later in the basement crawl space of her apartment building. Captain Hall says the FBI is testing some evidence, but he wouldn’t elaborate.
